Our trash is collected once a week on Thursdays. That means on Wednesday night, we go around the house, collecting the various trash bags from the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and wherever else we have trash and empty them into the outside receptacle for collection.
The ancillary trashcans normally aren’t full, but the kitchen trash is always ready to be emptied. There are times when we have to take the kitchen trash out twice in one day. The trash may not be filled to the brim, but full or not, if it smells we have to take it out. There’s nothing worse than old broccoli or shrimp shells left in the kitchen trash overnight.
Bokashi to the Rescue
Last Thursday was the first trash collection since starting with bokashi. We were all in shock that it took 6 whole days before the kitchen trash can was full enough to empty. Not only did it take 6 days before it needed to go out, but the trash had no odor.
Taking the trash out once every 6 days is a savings in time, money and energy. No more wasting time determining whose turn it is to take out the trash. We save money because we need fewer trash bags and we save energy because we no longer expend it arguing over who has to take the trash out.
If for no other reason, having fewer trips to the outdoor garbage is worth setting up a bokashi bin. Looking eye to eye at a raccoon late at night while holding a stinky trash bag is not fun.
