The other day while watching the Dr. Oz TV show, he introduced a product called Black African Soap. This soap is supposed to help soften dry skin and diminish acne.
Dry Skin and Acne?
One soap that tackles both dry skin and acne? I always thought dry skin and acne were mutually exclusive. Growing up as a kid I had oily skin and acne. As I got older, I found dry skin to be more of a problem, especially the hands.
I couldn’t quite figure out how one soap could take care of both problems, but I was willing to experiment. Having an acne-prone teenager in the same house as people with dry skin is the perfect household to test out the African Black Soap.
Let the African Black Soap Experiment Begin
We bought the Nubian Heritage brand of African Black Soap. It has a pleasant scent that’s not overwhelming. The light fragrance works well for men and women. My husband was pretty impressed with the scent of the soap.
We immediately noticed a difference after the first shower. Our skin felt softer and less dry. Because the initial results were positive we decided to continue the experiment.
Early Results Soap Results
We’ve been using the soap for three weeks. Each of us has noticed improvements in our skin. My daughter’s acne, although not completely gone, is getting better (to use her exact words “my skin looks amazing”). I especially noticed the difference in my hands while my husband’s elbows and shins have improved significantly.
Trying other Nubian Heritage Products
I have since found that Nubian Heritage offers a line of hand and body lotions. I decided to venture out and try their Lavender and Wild Flower lotion, while the rest of the family stuck with the Black African lotion (the soap is black, the lotion is not). They both smell good and have been doing a wonderful job in keeping our skin soft.

One word of warning regarding the lotion. Nubian Heritage currently uses the same type of dispenser for the lotion as they do with the African Black soap. The lotion is rather thick and more like a cream. Instead of a soap dispenser, they should distribute it in a container where you can dip your fingers to access it.
Total Household Conversion
We have since discontinued purchasing regular bar soap and now exclusively use the Nubian Heritage soaps and lotions. Nubian Heritage products are available at most health food stores. The soap comes in 13-ounce containers and costs around $11 (depending on the store) and the lotion in 8-ounce containers and costs between $8 and $12.
If you cannot find your local health store, you can purchase it online from Amazon or other online retailers.
